What to Wear to an Outdoor Holiday Market: A Men's Guide

What to wear to an outdoor holiday market, for men: a ribbed knit, a slim vest or light puffer, dark denim, and boots for three hours on cold cobblestones.

What to wear to an outdoor holiday market, men: a man in a black quilted vest over an oatmeal ribbed sweater and dark indigo jeans reaching for an ornament at a string-lit market stall with a cup of cider at dusk, cast: Hudson

The market opens at four and the lights come on around five, which is right about when the temperature drops eight degrees. In between you will walk the same three aisles twice, wait in line for cider, carry a wreath you did not plan on buying, and lose feeling in your toes somewhere near the candle stall. Working out what to wear to an outdoor holiday market as a man is mostly about that second hour.

The short version: a warm knit, a slim layer over it, dark denim, and boots with some grip. Nothing bulky enough to knock ornaments off a table. Nothing so thin you leave before the carolers start.

What should a man wear to an outdoor holiday market?

Wear a textured sweater as your base, a light insulated vest or jacket over it, dark jeans or a trouser below, and leather or suede boots. That combination keeps your core warm while leaving your arms free to carry bags, hold a cup, and dig through crates of ornaments. A ribbed crew in oatmeal or cream reads festive under string lights without a single reindeer on it. Over it, a slim quilted vest or a light puffer traps heat without the bulk of a parka, which matters in crowded aisles and when you duck into a heated shop. Below, dark indigo denim hides cider drips and goes with everything. Choose boots over sneakers, since cobblestones, slush, and sawdust paths get wet fast. Add a knit beanie if the forecast dips under forty. Keep the palette quiet: cream, black, olive, tobacco, and navy. The lights are already doing plenty.

Why does a ribbed sweater make the best base layer?

Texture holds warmth and it holds light. A flat sweatshirt goes dull at dusk, while a rib knit picks up every bulb on the stall and looks richer for it. It also layers cleanly, because the vertical rib lies flat under a vest instead of bunching at the armholes.

The 7 Diamonds Harrison Ribbed Sweater ($125) is the one we would pull first. It is an all-over rib in a slightly marled yarn, and the colorway, Jasmine, is a warm oatmeal cream despite the name. Wear it over a plain tee so you can push the sleeves up when the heated tent gets crowded. It looks like a sweater you have owned for ten winters, which is the point.

Vest or jacket: which layer works better at a holiday market?

A vest, if the afternoon sits in the forties and you plan to keep moving. A light puffer, if it is near freezing or you will be standing still for the tree lighting. Either beats a heavy parka, which turns every aisle into a game of hip checks and has to be carried the moment you step indoors.

The 7 Diamonds Atlas Vest ($140) in Black has a smooth shoulder yoke and a single band of channel quilting across the chest, so it stays slim and never reads as ski gear. Zip it over the Harrison and the cream frames the black like a good photograph. When the forecast turns, the 7 Diamonds REV Puffer Full Zip ($165) in Clay is the warmer call: a quilted body, soft modal sleeves you will keep on inside, and a mock neck that blocks wind without a scarf. Its pale stone color sits nicely against evergreen garland.

For a mild-weather market, the kind in Southern California or anywhere the low is fifty, swap both for the TravisMathew Cloud Waffle Shirt Jacket ($189.95) in Oxford Tan, worn open over a tee. Part shirt, part jacket, and it fits under a coat later if the night surprises you.

What pants and shoes work for walking a holiday market?

Dark denim with room to move. The 7 Diamonds Union Athletic Fit Denim ($128) in Breakwater is a deep indigo with no distressing and extra space through the thigh, so crouching to look at the lowest shelf of a woodworker's stall is not a negotiation. If the market is the first stop on a nicer evening, the Cuts SoHo Trouser ($126) in Marine Navy gives you a softer drape and a cuffed hem that looks deliberate with boots.

On your feet, brown suede chelsea boots or a waxed leather lace-up. You will cover two or three miles without noticing, much of it on cobblestone, wet boards, or packed snow. Leave the white sneakers home. Sizes run shallow on all of these, a few per size, so if one is doing real work in your plan, order it a couple of weeks out.

Frequently asked questions

Is a puffer jacket too much for a holiday market?

Not if it is a light one. A slim puffer with a quilted body and knit or stretch sleeves keeps you warm through the tree lighting without the bulk of a parka. Save the heavy down coat for nights well below freezing.

Can you wear sneakers to an outdoor Christmas market?

You can, but boots are the better choice. Market paths are often cobblestone, wet wood, or packed snow, and you will be on your feet for two to three hours. Suede chelsea boots or leather lace-ups stay warmer and drier.

What colors should men wear to a holiday market?

Quiet neutrals like cream, oatmeal, black, olive, tobacco, and navy. They photograph well under warm string lights and look seasonal without novelty prints. One light piece near the face, such as a cream sweater, keeps the outfit from going dark at dusk.

How do you stay warm at an outdoor market without a heavy coat?

Layer thin. A rib knit sweater over a tee, an insulated vest or light puffer on top, and a beanie in your pocket hold more heat than one bulky coat, and you can drop a layer the moment you step inside.

Buy the wreath. Carry it home over one shoulder. Dress for the second hour and you will (out)last the carolers.
